Christie’s is a world-renowned auction house that was founded in the UK in 1766 by James Christie. Annually, they offer around 350 auctions in over 80 categories, including fine and decorative art, jewellery, photography and wine, with prices ranging from $200 to $100 million.

Six times a year, Christie’s produce a magazine and distribute it exclusively to their most important clients and advisors around the world. As the centrepiece of their editorial output, the magazine contains articles on art, philanthropy, culture and design and offers a unique preview of the upcoming season’s auctions.

London-based design studio B.A.M. has been creative directing the magazine since 2014 and was recently appointed to develop a bold and impactful redesign, with the aim of keeping Christie’s at the forefront of today’s fast-moving art world whilst maintaining a high level of sophistication, elegance and clarity.

The revised format had to fit within a set of strict guidelines and weight restrictions, which were meticulously planned and researched to meet distribution protocols. The front half is printed on an uncoated paper stock to present the magazine’s editorial features, while a coated stock is used to display the upcoming auction highlights in the back half. The two are divided by a single-sheet, coloured paper tip-in to communicate the change of pace.

B.A.M. worked closely with Production Type on a bespoke version of Proto Grotesk, a punchy sans serif with a subtly quirky character, as well as a completely new set of matching italic styles. The typeface is used in a bold yet elegant manner across headlines, drop caps, body copy and captioning. Photography is specifically commissioned and art directed for each issue, be it a studio visit with Tracey Emin or a tour around the thriving cultural hubs of São Paulo.
