Grand Slang from Cologne-based foundry Nikolas Type is inspired by 20th-century calligraphy

German designer Nikolas Wrobel’s aims to capture a balance between fluidity and structure with his typefaces, which are distributed through his Cologne-based foundry, Nikolas Type.

His latest release, Grand Slang, is inspired by mid-20th-century calligraphy, mixing characteristics of both serif and grotesque letterforms to create a modern perspective on the art form. Nikolas cites the beauty and warmth of the work of North American typographers Oscar Ogg and William Addison Dwiggins as key references. Dwiggins is perhaps best known for coining the term ‘graphic designer’ in 1922 to describe his book design and calligraphy work.
