LEÓN ROMERO celebrates the International Year of the Periodic Table with molecule-inspired letterforms

Every year, Institut d’Estudis Catalans (Institution for Catalan Studies) in Barcelona celebrates the International Year of the Periodic Table with a small festival in its chemistry department. Local studio LEÓN ROMERO was invited to design the identity for its 2019 edition, which also marked the 150th anniversary of the periodic table as we know it.

The main requirement was to create a recognisable system that could be used for different levels of communication; from small disposable flyers to large posters around the campus, while avoiding any visual association with the periodic table seen in textbooks. For their solution, LEÓN ROMERO made molecule-inspired letterforms for AITP, the acronym of Any Internacional de la Taula Periòdica (International Year of the Periodic Table). The modular nature of the letterforms allows them to exist in multiple compositions, resulting in a varied visual language made from only a few elements.
