WORKING FROM HOME with Rotterdam-based Studio Dumbar

WORKING FROM HOME with Rotterdam-based Studio Dumbar

The Coronavirus has sent a shockwave through our industry, with studios, agencies and freelancers being forced to adapt their business and work remotely as we wait for the outbreak to subside. For the tenth and final instalment in our WFH mini-series, we spoke to Merijn, Christopher, Stan and Liza from Rotterdam-based Studio Dumbar.

In the evening I prefer to work on the couch or at the dinner table.

Merijn van Velsen, Designer

EM Have you got a daily routine going?

MVV The first days COVID struck the Netherlands and we all had to stay at home, it was crazy. My wife and I struggled to get things done. To fix this, we quickly made a schedule for us and our two little boys. This has been very helpful in bringing structure to the day. Now almost every day has been the same for weeks. My wife and I split the normal working day in half, we work half a day and are half a day with the boys. The rest of the work is usually done in the evenings and weekends.

EM Are you dressing up for work or keeping it cosy?

MVV I don’t like comfortable clothes like sweatpants. Even on a regular Sunday, I’d rather take a shower when I wake up and then dress ‘normal’, which is usually black.

EM Whereabouts in your home do you like to work from?

MVV We set up a small desk in our bedroom, where it is quiet and easy to focus. In the evening I prefer to work on the couch or at the dinner table.

EM How do you stay motivated while at home?

MVV First of all, I love what I do. Second, we are still very busy in the studio. This helps a lot in keeping the normal rhythm. Finally, we have a great team. While we don’t see each other in the studio, we take extra time to set up meetings to talk about what we’re doing or just to have a virtual drink together. This really helps.

Shower, breakfast, coffee and a cigarette in the sun and straight to work.

Christopher Noort, Designer

EM Have you got a daily routine going?

CN Absolutely, having the same morning routine as ’before’ gets me in the right mindset. I’m most creatively efficient in the morning and having a clear structure to get ready helps me utilise this. Shower, breakfast, coffee and a cigarette in the sun and straight to work.

EM Are you dressing up for work or keeping it cosy?

CN Dressing up like I would go to work really does it for me. Especially since it helps make a clear distinction between working days and the weekend.

EM Whereabouts in your home do you like to work from?

CN My girlfriend and I work from the dining table, but do meetings from the living room so we don’t disturb each other. By the end of the day, we get rid of our workstations and get ready for dinner. It works well because this way we have a clear ending of the workday.

TBI How do you stay motivated while at home?

CN Lots of smaller breaks, instead of one or two longer ones. Staying in touch with the team via chat/voice and have a laugh. Also, good music is key!

I love a big open space like we have in our studio.

Stan Haanappel, Designer

EM Have you got a daily routine going?

SH At the beginning of the lockdown period I started my day with a home workout with some fitness devices I collected, but I have to be honest this routine didn’t last long. Now I wake up, shower, get some breakfast and sit down in my pop up living room office.

EM Are you dressing up for work or keeping it cosy?

SH Yes, I read an article about wearing shoes will help your productivity. You need to dress as if you go to work. So I started to wear a different pair of sneakers from my slowly growing sneaker collection every day. But at a certain point, I wore them all. I am now back to socks and espadrilles again.

EM Whereabouts in your home do you like to work from?

SH Living room, I love a big open space like we have in our studio. In small rooms, I get a little bit claustrophobic. It also helps that we have a lot of artworks and prints hanging around in our living room what gives me motivation and joy while spending my time here. Since the lockdown, I actually started to appreciate these pieces more than before.

EM How do you stay motivated while at home?

SH Music!!! I can get in hyper-focus by using my noise cancellation headphones.

I enjoy being there as I am surrounded with most of my books.

Liza Enebeis, Creative Director

EM Have you got a daily routine going?

LE Yes always regardless if I am working from home or not. On weekdays I always wake up at 6, read the news, check mail, get dressed etc and then work work work. Weekends I have no sense of time and just enjoy the day as it happens. Especially now where it is one very long stretch of working from home, a difference in rhythm really helps.

EM Are you dressing up for work or keeping it cosy?

LE I always dress up, I think if I didn’t I would never start working plus I am on Zoom most of the day so having clothes on helps

EM Whereabouts in your home do you like to work from?

LE I work in the living room, I enjoy being there as I am surrounded with most of my books and its the first time since we moved here that I could spend so much time in here which I really enjoy – they only drawback is that we don’t have a table in this space so we set up a makeshift camping table – and it works but it’s not something I would like to keep there forever.

EM How do you stay motivated while at home?

LE I love the projects and the people I am working with so whether I am at home or in the studio my motivation remains the same. The fact that we are a team also helps as we all collectively motivate each other.
