In our opinion, TYPEONE has quickly established itself as the best magazine for typography in the industry, both in its forward-thinking content and its ever-evolving design. That’s why, when Founder Amber Weaver invited us to be the Guest Editor of TYPEONE’s fifth issue – a first for the magazine – we jumped at the opportunity.

Fittingly, the theme of the issue is ‘Branding x Typography.’ Two undeniably interconnected topics that we know and love dearly. In our role as Guest Editor, we’ve curated 136 pages of editorial content that delve into the connections between branding and typography that haven’t been explored in great detail before, or maybe don’t get the attention they should, or simply aren’t fully understood.

We’ve ventured into the future, investigating branding for cryptocurrency, cannabis, psilocybin and NFTs whilst also venturing into culture, exploring the use of languages and scripts unfamiliar to the western world. We’ve asked type designers about what it actually takes to launch a typeface commercially, and asked design studios of various shapes and sizes about the prices of branding yourself. And in more ways than one, we’ve tried to discover how custom typefaces actually work. But that’s only skimming the surface of what can be found within the magazine.

For the cover design, we commissioned one of our favourite graphic designers of all time, Daan Rietbergen. He’s injected his reputably bold approach to typography onto the front and centre of the publication, drawing a completely custom ‘5’ for us.

To make it all happen, we worked closely with the TYPE01 team and our expansive network of writers, designers and studios. The magazine was once again designed by London-based Studio Ground Floor, who subtly reinvent their approach with each issue; this time adopting our very own JHA Times Now serif typeface as a nod to our own branding. The writers of the articles include the brilliant Poppy Thaxter, Harry Bennett, Zoë Loring Murphy, Ritupirya Basu, Craig Berry, Alice Sherwin and Monotype’s Emilios Theofanous. And last but definitely not least, the contributing studios and designers include Koto, OMSE, Colophon Foundry, Moniker, NaN, Pangram Pangram, Vanderbrand, Forth + Back, Marina Veziko and many, many more.
