The Birthdays Design rebrands Japanese skincare company Nostrum with a pure, gentle approach
Nostrum is a Japanese skincare company that offers a range of high-quality, organic products made from natural Mediterranean ingredients, including olive oil from Greece and argan oil from Morocco. With the brand’s popularity growing in Japan, Athens-based studio The Birthdays Design was invited to reimagine its visual identity, with a particular focus on its face, body and hair care series.
The studio’s solution possesses a gentle and pure aura reflective of the products natural formulations, leaving any excess visual noise aside in the process. Through an elegant, high contrast combination of typefaces, the identity holds a calming nature reminiscent of both Mediterranean landscapes and Japanese architecture.
Set in Grilli Type’s sharp, calligraphic serif GT Sectra Display, the logotype is anchored to the bottom of the labels on almost every product to create a distinguished focal point. It’s accompanied by GT Sectra Text for supporting details, Google’s Noto Serif JP for Japanese text, and Konstantina Louka’s dainty script font Petit Nuage, which provides a layer of flair to the otherwise stark and structured typographic arrangements. Also, the balance of left and centre-aligned text on the packaging creates a clear and defined hierarchy between the overarching brand and supporting product information.
