MAPP MTL is a non-profit organisation that showcases the boundless potential of projection mapping through an annual festival in Montréal, Canada. The 2019 theme of ‘Collective Imaginaries’ marked the festival’s fourth edition; and for the second year in a row, they collaborated with local studio Demande Spéciale on the visual identity and campaign.

The studio was briefed with finding a way to educate the general public about projection mapping as an art form, as it is not necessarily understood or known in the mainstream. They also faced the challenge of visually representing the projections differently to how they’d been shown in previous years and incorporating bright colour into the identity, as the client was very keen to move away from the black and white palette of previous years.

Demande Spéciale chose to represent the three different parts of projection mapping: the spectators’s gaze, the trajectory and the surface, through three simplistic, schematic illustrations. The geometric forms are filled with gradients, emphasising the idea of mapping and alluding to constant movement. Rhythmic animations add an extra layer of life to the predominantly poster-based visuals.
