MW Real Estate set out to create an office environment that felt just like a coffee shop. They decided the best way to do it was to build an actual coffee shop, and brought in design office Perky Bros to help them make it happen. Named Retrograde, the cosy coffee shop is nestled into Nashville’s east side and provides the neighbourhood with a welcoming spot to slow down and press pause.

Playing on the name, the identity is inspired by the cosmic phenomenon of retrograde motion; specifically, the moment when Mercury appears to hover and begin to move backwards. The back slanted italic logotype contains three custom ‘Sputnik R’s’ with geometric counters in reference to Mercury, Earth and the Sun. The monogram brings them together in a simple, single-weight symbol, and the soft-green colour palette brings it all together alongside a contrasting touch of bright satellite-inspired gold.
