Based in both Barcelona and NYC, design studio Pràctica have developed the identity system for the 12th edition of Barcelona’s annual design festival Blanc!, a celebration of contemporary design and creative culture rich with the industry’s leading practitioners.

Taking inspiration from shape-based children’s games due to the festivals’ educational focus, Pràctica’s identity is fundamentally systematic; using modular grids to create dynamic abstract letterforms. Referencing Blanc!’s playful character in the process, the explosive letterforms become the backdrop for the identity to dance upon – a context made all the more lively through the entirely digital and animated output of the 2020 festival.

As a result, Blanc!’s 2020 identity could be pushed to places it has previously been too analogue to do so, with vibrant gradients, outrageous colours and engaging audiovisual explorations taking centre stage. “It allowed us to think of the identity in a very digital manner,” Pràctica’s Anna Berbiela recalls, “allowing the use of gradients and the motion implied in the very nature of the kid’s construction games,” she adds.

Recalling the beginning of Pràctica’s journey with Blanc!, initially crafting the festival’s visual identity in 2019, Berbiela explains “to maintain the changing nature of the festival, the identity had to be solid yet flexible enough to retain a certain uniqueness in each edition,” Berbiela recalls, doing so without losing sight of the original identity.

“The combination of the festivity that characterises this festival, with the rigorous knowledge you can acquire there, is the answer to the visual identity,” she tells us, playfully transforming the brand’s neutral typographic structure each year. With 2020 being no exception, the end result is extraordinary, screaming with character, candour and convention-defying execution of form, function and flair.
