U.I.WD.’s simplicity-led identity for Estúdio Gustavo Utrabo reflects the intimacy of the practice

Internationally operating and globally acclaimed architects Estúdio Gustavo Utrabo, established with headquarters in Chicago and São Paulo, have sought the creative council of São Paulo-based studio U.I.WD., working together to shape a striking, simplicity-led identity. Comprehensively conceived, designed and executed across Utrabo’s printed and digital spaces – from the studio’s website and presentation decks to each and every piece of printed ephemera – the subsequent aesthetic reflects the open, intimate and uncomplicated processes behind Utrabo’s practice, culminating in a sculptural, confident visual tone.

Ultimately, this graphic ambience is achieved through an image-based execution, whereby the photography, artwork and 3D renderings of Utrabo’s work take precedence over the typography, which performs a more supportive – yet equally intricate – role. Applied across a detailed modular grid system, U.I.WD. opted for Dinamo’s Whyte Inktrap as the primary typeface, choosing the punctured sans serif due to the architectural subtleties and curvature of its letterforms. A semi-rounded sans serif, Documan by Displaay, then supports Whyte Inktrap, providing a pragmatic contrast that embodies the duality of Utrabo’s practice.
