Making videos was never this easy: Algo’s handy Figma plug-in eases the woes of video creation

“Creating videos is complicated,” says Algo’s CEO & Creative Director Luca Gonnelli. “Only a few designers within organisations have animation in their skillset. Those who do are often swamped with mundane, repetitive tasks delegated by the entire company. Sound familiar?”

In a bid to remedy this pervasive issue, Algo, a Turin-based leading data-visualisation studio, used their video automation expertise to create a Figma plug-in and managed service that empowers design teams to produce limitless on-brand videos. This innovative tool revolutionises video creation, enabling anyone in your team to generate videos by tweaking details directly in Figma, also offering the capability to incorporate music and export videos in a multitude of formats.

Primarily aimed at design teams within funded start-ups, scale-ups, and larger organisations, the tool allows every designer, regardless of their animation skills, to create a plethora of outputs – including video cards, titles, intros & outros, and simple data visualisations – on demand. “When developing a brand guideline,” says Gonnelli, “studios often write down rules on how motion should work. Sometimes these are even made available as After Effects template files, but that’s too complex. Our bet is that by making those templates available inside a Figma file which is shared with the whole team, they will be used much more – making brands more interesting.”

The initial setup process for the plug-in, which can take anything between two to four weeks, is charged per week. After the setup is complete, clients initiate their subscription, which allows them to use the plug-in and generate unlimited videos. This subscription model is priced at $300/month. If needed, the Algo team can be re-engaged at any time (even for just one week) for updates and improvements to the bespoke templates.

“Despite being a client-oriented service,” Gonnelli continues, “we’re gonna share some demo figma files with the community from time to time, to let anyone try the tool and create videos (for free) based on our demo templates.”

The look and feel of the plug-in is derived from Algo’s main identity, with the intention of making it more playful and interactive. The team started with their signature brand elements – dark mode, flashy colours, gradients – and then introduced blocks, rounded corners and gradients to add some fun to the look. “We then played with Framer (our website runs on it) and their new feature – custom pointers,” Gonnelli adds. “It allowed us to add a fun interactive touch.”

The brand’s typeface, Circular Air Pro by Laurenz Brunner, is used for the plug-in identity and assets, while the colour palette is centred around the colour pink, which was chosen as the dedicated colour for this Figma initiative. The palette also includes pastel and fluorescent variations of every colour from the brand’s own range of hues, neatly tying the plug-in to the larger visual of Algo.
