Man meets machine: moodley breathes life into robotics for AIRSKIN’s logical, efficient identity

Security solutions brand AIRSKIN welcomes a reimagined relationship between man and machine, whereby robotic production processes are made safer and more efficient through soft-padded pressure sensors applied to dangerous, heavy-duty machinery. Courtesy of Austria and Germany-based creative agency moodley, AIRSKIN’s identity similarly marries an organic and technical tone, realised across a brand that embraces AIRSKIN’s binary nature – resulting in something both versatile and warm, technical and comfortable.

Leading the brand is moodley’s bespoke typeface and logomark, the prominent negative space of which finds direct inspiration in AIRSKIN’s pressure sensors. “The unique typeface reflects the shape and main characteristics of the product, the AIRSKIN Pads,” Art Director Adam Katyi tells us. “The inner and outer rounded corners of the typeface symbolise the soft, air-filled shapes,” he explains, “and at large sizes, the rounded shapes are clearly visible, while at small sizes the reader experiences an overall softness,” culminating in a minimal, distinct visual aesthetic that mirrors the lightweight nature of the products themselves.

Designed by Katyi’s other enterprise – Hungarumlaut, a type design studio founded in 2013 – the bespoke typeface sets the brand’s modernist pace, informing the identity’s serene, no-fuss graphic approach. “The product itself is white and made up of clean, geometric, slightly rounded shapes,” Katyi contextualises, “the elements of the design system reflect this – pure, minimalist shapes and simplified colours.” The primary hue of – status blue – comes from the AIRSKIN pad’s ‘Active’ switch.

The physicality of the sensors also informed the distinctive modularity of the brand, with the rounded corners and dots referencing the pad’s own contours, as well as the bespoke typeface. “The main block of the key visual comes from a letter ‘A’ and has a fixed angle,” Katyi details, using the same 20° angle throughout the branding. “The system is flexible, it is possible to add elements to the main shapes from all sides, always depending on the content,” he concludes, “if you need to display a lot of information and images, you can use several elements of different sizes to arrange the content.”
