Poppy ThaxterMythology share the creative flow and process of their branding projects in Work in Progress 2023
Since 2008, creative agency Mythology have dedicated their practice to finding a brand’s ‘highest purpose.’ With over 15 years of experience guiding modern brands, they are pleased to share WIP (Work in Progress) 2023, the second edition of the studio’s archive of past brand identity projects. Like the first – published in 2021 – it honours the creative process and provides a detailed glimpse into the thoughts and feelings behind each project. This includes concepts, designs, and typographic studies, alongside one-off commissions, collaborations, and plenty of iterations.
To reflect the fluid and organic workflow of Mythology’s projects, the team opted for a grid-less system. Instead, it embraces what they call a “copy/paste/free-flow format,” the spirit of which is matched with an expressive and vibrant cover. “Mythology's approach to branding is all about world-building,” Creative Director & Head of Design Sophie Mascatello and Designer Bryson Lee tell us. “The Work In Progress cover reflects this with a design that leans into depictions of ancient mythological lore.”
Inspired by the artwork that Lee created for the first edition of the book – which itself was influenced by Art Nouveau’s opulence – WIP 2023’s cover draws upon 18th-century grotesque ornamentation. “With a patchwork of vines, mythological harpies, and architectural typography, the cover emulates this approach to creating something inspired by past and present – both digital and traditional,” they explain.
Fittingly, Mythology’s brand mark and mascot – a Harpy – makes an appearance on the book. Depicted in a grotesque style, Harpie can be found on the spine, with wings expanding to the covers to form a full ‘M’ for Mythology.
For those interested in buying a copy of the 800-page compendium, WIP 2023 will be available to purchase later in 2023. “Please keep an eye out on our Instagram and website for more info as the summer rolls on :)” Mascatello concludes.
