A beloved Italian burger restaurant, known as “The Artisan Hamburger of Verona,” Bigger Burgers is popular with students and locals alike – with a reputation for locally sourced and high-quality ingredients. For their next location, with an updated interior design direction, they were in need of a fresh and cohesive identity to match. Working closely with the interior design team at VicenziDalbon, Verona-born (and Australia-based) creative director Michele Verze was invited to craft a look that would not only bring vivacity and playfulness to the brand, but also serve as a nod to its ‘street’ origins.

The visual language ties in closely with many of the restaurant’s elements, such as the neon light design which informed the vibrant colour palette. The minimalist patterns of the identity arrived in a similar fashion. “By observing the interior palette we noticed a series of simple geometric shapes coming to life,” Verze tells us, “for instance square tables with rounded table bases, triangular metal wall panels for the bar section and a circular mesh pattern for the seating benches.” This would inform the suite of illustrations, bringing colour and energy to both the brand’s digital and print outputs. The creative director also reveals that the early 20th-century art movement of Futurism served as a key source of inspiration, in part owing to Verona’s role as an important hub for the movement. “Therefore,” he adds, “I felt the concept married nicely with the interior design direction we were taking.”

Taking the existing logotype as a starting point, Verze opted for Bretagne’s Cucina and Minor Praxis’ Ingram Mono to unify the typographic direction. “We fell instantly in love with Cucina (also Italian for ‘kitchen’),” Verze notes. “This font has the perfect old school feel we were looking for, and in our eyes was the right vehicle for visually delivering the craft and quality of the traditional Italian, locally-sourced ingredients.” Contrasting with this classic style, the monospace of Ingram Mono adds a modern touch, corresponding with the style of the venue. Lively, vibrant and unpretentious, the bold colours, type and colloquial copy result in a stylish and contemporary look while remaining equally accessible and alluring.
